Turkish Travertine — Denizli, Afyon Sugar, Antalya Crema, Silver, Walnut, Chiaro

Cross-cut and vein-cut describe the block's cutting direction and define surface texture. Cross-cut (parallel): when the block is cut parallel to sedimentary layers, a cloud-like circular texture emerges. Classic travertine look; prominent porosity and natural texture. Vein-cut (perpendicular): when cut perpendicular to layers, a linear elongated vein texture emerges. Modern look; linear veining shines in book-match panels on facades. Denizli Silver and Afyon Sugar are commonly vein-cut; Denizli Beige is classic cross-cut. Decision hinges on the project's classical-modern aesthetic direction.

Travertine is naturally porous (2-6% voids); sold in two forms: filled (resin-filled) or unfilled (raw). FILLED: voids filled with epoxy resin, smooth polished surface, easy cleaning; preferred for interior floor and countertop. Downside: on exterior, UV can cause resin discoloration and drop-out; LEED HPD may be needed for resin composition. UNFILLED: natural porous surface, classic antique look; preferred for exterior facade, pool deck, landscape. Downside: dirt/water can seep in, requiring sealer application (silicone-acrylic-based, 3-5 year renewal). Raw natural stone inherently doesn't require LEED HPD. Most Sipahi SKUs can be ordered in both formats.

Denizli travertine is the world's #1 travertine exporter (İMİB 2024 data). Reasons: (1) Pamukkale basin is one of the world's most active travertine formation regions — hot spring calcium carbonate deposition; (2) reserve depth — dozens of quarries active around Denizli, high block/slab capacity; (3) fabrication ecosystem — Denizli city is a sector hub with travertine processing workshops; (4) price competitiveness — typically 20-40% more economical container FOB than Italian (Tivoli) or Mexican (Durango) travertine; (5) İMİB export procedure — regular shipping, USGBC LEED recognition. Denizli Beige is the main export SKU; primary markets: US, China, UK, Saudi Arabia.

Travertine can be used on exterior facades but requires different measures than marble. Risk-mitigation pairs: (1) Freeze-thaw (EN 12371): >1.5% water absorption is a facade threshold — solution: honed or polished finish + sealer application; (2) Resin drop-out (filled travertine): UV-driven resin fading and drop-out risk — solution: prefer unfilled, or specify UV-resistant resin; (3) Mechanical anchoring: travertine calcite structure is softer than marble; AISI 316 stainless anchor hole diameter and pull-out testing require separate calculation from marble; (4) Thickness: minimum 30 mm on facade; 20 mm for interior only. Five main travertine finishes: (1) POLISHED — polished reflectance, interior floor/wall; modern aesthetic; (2) HONED — matte flat, ADA-compliant wet-floor slip resistance; hotel and residential common; (3) BRUSHED — light-textured antique-modern hybrid; (4) LEATHER — medium texture, modern rustic; bathroom/kitchen; (5) TUMBLED — antique look, heritage restoration and exterior open-air patio. Filled/unfilled is layered on top of finish; honed filled travertine is the most common choice for interior floor and countertops. Antique/aged finish in classical restoration is typically a full tumbled/brushed combination.

Turkish travertine is under the sector-baseline EPD roadmap; the Turkey Marble Industry Federation's PCR programme continues. Individual firm EPDs build on this baseline.
