Marble is metamorphosed calcite/dolomite; homogeneous appearance, polished finish highly reflective. Travertine is sedimentary hot-spring deposition; characteristic porous texture (2-5% void ratio). Decision criteria: (1) aesthetics — travertine warm-organic, marble cool-modern; (2) freeze-thaw (EN 12371) — marble calcite structure more durable, filled travertine risks resin drop-out on exterior; (3) tolerance — marble handles ±0.5 mm comfortably, large travertine slabs may require filling; (4) price — travertine typically 20-40% more economical than white marble; (5) LEED — resin-filled travertine requires HPD.
