1. Coverings Fair History — From the 1990s to Today's North American Marble Trade Gate
Coverings was founded in 1990 as the shared trade platform for the North American ceramic tile, natural stone, and marble industries. The Ceramic Tile Distributors Association (CTDA), Marble Institute of America (MIA) — now Natural Stone Institute (NSI) —, Tile Council of North America (TCNA), and Ceramica Italia jointly organized the early editions. The fair opened with approximately 8-10 thousand visitors and 400-500 exhibitors; by the mid-2020s it had settled at 22-25 thousand B2B buyers and 1,100+ exhibitors, becoming the largest horizontal surface trade fair in North America.
The fair rotates each April between Orlando (Orange County Convention Center) and Atlanta (Georgia World Congress Center). The rotation axis preserves US East Coast and Southeast weight while shifting the visitor geographic profile across the fair year. Orlando years draw architects from Florida, Georgia, Texas, and New York-New Jersey; Atlanta years strengthen participation from the Carolinas, Tennessee, Alabama, and the Chicago-Midwest region.
Coverings visitor profiles cluster around five categories: (1) architects and interior designers (AIA and IIDA members, approximately 28 percent); (2) general contractors and construction firms (approximately 22 percent); (3) distributors and wholesalers (approximately 18 percent); (4) fabricators and tile setters (approximately 16 percent); (5) property owners, developers, and residential end-users (approximately 16 percent). This balance positions Coverings as both a B2B networking event and a spec-driven architect dialogue platform.
The program runs on three tracks: (a) the exhibitor hall for manufacturer and brand booths; (b) Coverings Learn for accredited education seminars carrying AIA CEU, IIDA CEU, and NARI CEU credit; (c) the Coverings Installation Design Showcase, an architect-facing curated design floor. For Turkish marble producers, tracks (b) and (c) function as strategic observation zones.
