Stone Selection Criteria for Healthcare Facilities
Natural stone surfaces specified for hospitals and healthcare facilities must be assessed against criteria that differ significantly from standard building projects. Surface porosity is the primary concern: low-porosity stone reduces the ability of bacteria and viruses to colonise the surface; granite is measurably superior to most marble varieties in this respect.
Chemical resistance is equally critical: stone specified for hospital environments must demonstrate chemical inertness against chlorine-based, alcohol-based and enzymatic disinfectants routinely used in clinical settings. Granite performs at a level competitive with most synthetic floor coverings on this criterion. For wet areas and corridor floors, a surface roughness value of R9 or above is mandatory; Sipahi Marble provides the appropriate surface treatment (flamed, sandblasted or honed) and the corresponding slip-resistance certificate.
